Former Finance Minister and Member of Parliament Ravi Karunanayake, along with Lakshman Fonseka, one of Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa’s closest personal associates, are making significant efforts to bring together the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and the United National Party (UNP) to form a broad political alliance.
Several senior UNP leaders, including former powerful ministers Akila Viraj Kariyawasam and Navin Dissanayake, strongly believe that the SJB and the UNP must unite. They, along with a number of key UNP leaders, are actively involved in this mission.
However, a minority group including former senior ministers Vajira Abeywardena and Sagala Ratnayaka hold an opposing view. Their position is that this political journey should move forward together with Namal Rajapaksa.
Confirming that position, Venerable Ambanwala Gnanaloka Thero, Chief Incumbent of Sedawatta Weheragoda Purana Viharaya and a leading monk in Colombo known to be very close to Ranil Wickremesinghe and his family, told “lankanewsweek” that UNP leader and former President Ranil Wickremesinghe is planning to form an alliance not with Sajith Premadasa and the SJB, but with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP).
He further pointed out that UNP Chairman Vajira Abeywardena and Sagala Ratnayaka also support that position. He stated that this group led by Ranil Wickremesinghe is likely to support Namal Rajapaksa, the National Organizer of the SLPP, in the 2029 Presidential Election.
Meanwhile, one of Ranil Wickremesinghe’s closest personal associates told “lankanewsweek” that Ranil has clearly stated to him that he has no intention of moving forward with Sajith Premadasa and the SJB, and that he intends to extend his support to Namal Rajapaksa.
Accordingly, he said that he opposes that decision and will instead join forces with Sajith Premadasa, the leader of the SJB and the Opposition Leader. He also pointed out that the majority of party leaders—including Ravi Karunanayake, Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, and Navin Dissanayake—as well as the overall party supporters, believe that the SJB and the UNP should unite.
At the same time, the newspaper “Mawbima” has revealed that a top-level order has been issued within the UNP to immediately launch a massive media campaign against Sajith Premadasa.Accordingly, during the past week, a group of journalists supportive of the UNP, several social media activists, and leaders of several opposition political parties were reportedly instructed by top UNP leadership to begin a propaganda campaign specifically targeting Sajith Premadasa.
